Buddy in Maryland

Buddy

Meow! My name is Buddy and I live in Maryland with my human moms, a girl cat, and two rescued dogs. My humans think I might be a Ragdoll cat, which is a rare breed. I am the kitty to the right in the picture.

I showed up one day in the fall of 2004 at the home of my mom’s good friends. Another cat, a tabby, also showed up with me, but we are not related and he is feral. The friend felt sorry for us and started feeding us. I was very skittish and would run away every time I saw her, even though I knew she was putting food out for us. After about four weeks, I felt more comfortable around her and would let her pet me, though my tabby companion did not. (I am a very loveable cat and love being petted.) By this time, the weather was getting colder, so the friend put out a cat carrier with a pillow inside and a beach blanket over it and I would sleep in there at night. She could not take me inside because she already had four cats. I would see them through the glass door and we would hiss at each other. The tabby cat also did not like me very much anymore. I think he was beginning to feel territorial. I also had a name now. The friend’s niece had visited one day and named me Dragon, a very scary name, but I am not scary.

My mom’s friend was trying real hard to find me a home, but all the cat people she knew already had cats. She was also not happy that I liked to stalk the wild birds and would even kill one on occasion—not because I was hungry, but just because I could. By now she was very sad. She knew she’d have to catch me and take me to the county animal shelter because winter was coming and it would be very, very cold. She didn’t want to take me to the shelter because many kitties who go there don’t get adopted and end up going early over the Rainbow Bridge.

One day my now mom called her friend just to say hi and catch up. On a whim, the friend asked my mom if she’d like to adopt a beautiful, loveable cat. Surprise! Mom said yes, so the friend caught me and took me to her vet, who checked me over. It was not fun. I had to get shots and then get neutered. My new mom picked me up from the vet and took me to my new home. I stay indoors now and am very spoiled. I especially love my cat tree, and I love to be petted and cuddled. My new mom didn’t like the name Dragon (I didn’t either) and renamed me Buddy, which is perfect because we are best buddies!

My ex tabby companion still lives in the woods behind my mom’s friends’ house. They say he is very feral and won’t let them near him, even though they still feed him. I am very lucky to have found such a wonderful home.
