Out in Arlington

McCaffrey ('Caffrey) Coyle

Born October 13, 1997. Gotcha Day December 1, 1997.

baby McCaffrey

My name is McCaffrey, but daddy started calling me 'Caffrey soon after I adopted him because he says I'm too little for so many syllables. Humans can be so silly, but I love him anyway.

My story is a lot sadder than Heinlein's. You see, I was a street kitty. I don't remember my mom cat at all. Either she was a feral and we were born in the streets, or some horrid human dumped my brother an me in the streets when were were only three or four weeks old!!! Luckily for me and my brother, some nice human found us and rushed us to the Arlington Animal Welfare League shelter.

Some very nice humans took care of us at the shelter for over two weeks, while they treated us for respiratory infections and malnutition. Finally, after those two weeks they moved us from the back room and into a cage in a room with lots of other cats.

After a few hours, a human picked up my brother and left with him...I never saw my brother again and I was sad. I spent all afternoon crying in my cage, but none of the humans that came to visit me took me home with them. Then, my future human came in and looked at a different little girl, then even he left and I was still all alone. I didn't know what to do, so I cryed some then napped.

About an hour later, my human came back again, but the shelter human with him said "I'm, sorry, that little girl is already adopted. But no one has asked for this little baby." My human walked over to my cage, and the shelter lady opened it. He picked me up and I cried happy tears, then climbed onto his shoulders and PURRRRED for all I was worth!!!! That did the trick. A short (but scary awful) car ride later, my new human brought me home. I didn't even weigh a full pound, but I'm bigger now...almost six pounds as of May 1998! My human calls me his sweet little girl.

I hope my brother is as happy with his human as I am. My human felt bad that he missed the chance to let me and my brother adopt him, so he went out a week later and got me my new brother and best friend, Heinlein. He might be twice my size, but I'm the alpha cat around here 'cause I moved in first!
